Adventurous tobogganing | Top winter activity in Grindelwald | Best fun ever!

Sleigh | We rented our sleighs on top of the mountain from INTERSPORT Rent-Network Bergstation First (Bergstation First, 3818 First) and dropped them off at Bort cable car station.

There are countless amazing winter activities in Grindelwald! Sledding or tobogganing is one of them. We took the sledging run from sunny Grindelwald First and had a great time! In addition, the cable car journey up the mountain is simply wonderful. The views of this winter-wonder part of Switzerland are just amazing. I can only repeat myself; WE LOVE GRINDELWALD!

Wonderful winter 2020/2021

This winter, 2020/2021, has been blessed with plenty of snow and great wintery weather. Furthermore, it is the first “real” winter for us here in Switzerland! We arrived towards the end of winter in 2019 and could not fully enjoy winter activities back then.  This winter, however, we could and we did! I mean, look at it, you just have to dive in!

In Grindelwald, you can have it all, in our opinion. Therefore, it comes as no surprise, that we spent a fun-filled-mini-winter-holiday right here.

Three entire days filled with wonderful winter-wonder activities in Grindelwald.

On day one, we checked out sunny Grindelwald Bussalp during a lovely winter hike. Day two was the day of the “Jungfraujoch ”, one of Switzerland´s main tourist attractions and an unforgettable experience. The third day was reserved for sledding!

Sledding. Sledging. Tobogganing. Sleigh riding.

A winter activity with many names that all have one thing in common: Fun.

Most of us know it from “back in the days”, a dearly-loved childhood activity. In Switzerland, this winter activity is available at any age. In fact, a couple of runs in Switzerland are rather challenging, made for real sledging enthusiasts.

Winter activities in Grindelwald | The Jungfrau Region has it all

As always, one can have it all, especially here in the Jungfrau region.

Are you in need for tactical manoeuvres? No problem, check out the fox run next to the Lauberhorn route to Wengen.

Or do you look for a diverse run? Make your way to Mürren or Männlichen mountain, or better, both!

How about a special adventure? Get on the Eiger run . At night!

You are still not satisfied? No worries, hike up from Grindelwald-First to Faulhorn and you will be able to experience the longest descent in the world ! The sledging run called “Big Pintenfritz”, starts at 2680 metres a.s.l. on Faulhorn mountain. It can only be reached by foot! For a whole two and a half hours the keen sledgers have to pull their sleighs up the mountain. Once this is accomplished the bravest sledgers can run the 15-kilometre distance down in roughly 30 minutes! Next time, maybe.

Grindelwald First sledding & some REAL winter pictures

Our own sledding experience in Grindelwald First started with a wonderful cable car ride.  For almost half an hour, we stared out of the cabin onto the powdery-fluffy-snow-covered landscape below, heaven!

On top, we first went to the local INTERSPORT Rent-Network in order to get our sleighs. Easy-peasy!

Next, we realized the outstanding beauty of this mountain, hence it was time for some REAL winter pictures. Check these out.

Oh yes, let´s have a close-up. That look!

I didn´t look as cool, but felt like it anyway, hahahaha 🙂

Alright, enough if this! Let the sledding begin. In fact, check out our Video an and journey with us down the hill.

The route

The route from First to Schreckfeld is pretty easy and just beautiful. The sleigh run, the landscape, the sun on our faces, the wind in our hair…sounds cheesy? I can´t help it! It actually was THAT nice! This part of the route allows you to enjoy the surroundings whilst sledging with a descent speed down the hill. Splendid!

The second bit, from Schreckfeld to Bort is a little more challenging. Some steeper parts, that require, at least in our opinion, heavier breaking. Happy legs!

As a matter of fact, I never realized that you can get sore muscles from breaking during a sleigh ride. Is that news to you too? Believe me, you can!

Personally, I found especially the part through the forest quite steep and therefore put my feet down, literally. At a lonely hut, we gave our aching legs some time off and took a little break.

Regrettably, the sledging fun was finished before it was meant to finish, as the last part of the route was closed due to lack of snow.

No problem, we hiked the rest down and enjoyed this as much as the sleigh riding. Winter hiking is yet another wonderful winter activity in Grindelwald.

Once again and please accept my apologies if I keep on repeating myself, but look at this!

After roughly 90 minutes we arrived back in Grindelwald. We took a long breath in and a full breath out and thought about sledding. What a wonderful winter activity in Grindelwald!
